Amiyah: All right, let's spin the wheel and see what we have today.

    Poke: boom. Artichokes!

Amiyah: The wheel clicked to a stop on the artichoke, the leafy bud that hides a tender heart beneath its armor. The hosts wrapped up the season with a fascinating thistle you eat petal by petal.

Poke: Oh, this is going to be a good one. Artichokes has range.

  2. History

Amiyah: Let us go back in time. What is the story of artichokes?
Poke: Artichokes were grown around the Mediterranean since ancient times, prized by the Greeks and Romans. The plant is actually a kind of thistle, harvested before its flower bud opens.

Amiyah: I did not know that at all.

Poke: From the Mediterranean the artichoke spread across Europe and later to the Americas. It became a celebrated delicacy, especially in Italian and Spanish cooking.

  3. Fun Facts

Amiyah: What are the facts that are going to blow my mind today?
Poke: An artichoke is the unopened flower bud of a thistle plant.

    Amiyah: Wait, really?

Poke: You eat the soft base of each leaf and the tender heart inside.

Amiyah: Okay, that is so good to know.

Poke: If left to bloom, an artichoke opens into a large purple flower.

Amiyah: I did not know that at all.

Poke: The fuzzy choke in the center is removed before eating the heart.

    Amiyah: That tracks.

Poke: Artichokes are part of the same family as sunflowers and daisies.

  4. Varieties

Amiyah: Let us talk varieties. What is out there?
Poke: Artichokes come in a few types that differ in size and color.

Poke: I did not know that at all.

Amiyah: Purple artichokes have a striking color and nutty flavor.

    Poke: That tracks.

Amiyah: Italian artichokes are often elongated and spiny.

Poke: In Italy, artichokes are braised, fried, and stuffed.

  6. Myth

Amiyah: Time for the Myth of the Week. What do people get wrong?
Poke: A lot of people think some people think the whole artichoke is eaten, leaves and all.

    Amiyah: Oh, I love that.

Poke: Here is the truth. You eat only the soft base of each leaf and the tender heart. The tough leaf tips and the fuzzy center choke are not eaten.

  7. Fan Question

Poke: Time for our favorite part, the fan question.
Poke: How do I eat a whole steamed artichoke?

    Amiyah: Ooh, good one.

Amiyah: Pull off a leaf, dip the base in sauce, and scrape the soft part off with your teeth. When the leaves are gone, remove the fuzzy choke and enjoy the heart.

  8. Host Opinions

Amiyah: Alright, real talk. Here is what I actually think.
Amiyah: Honestly, I went in unsure and came out a fan. It earned its spot today.
